I think this is really amazing and makes learning fun. I wish I had this when I was going to school.

Define the terms SUSPENSE and FORESHADOWING.

With your small group, find four examples of suspense. Write the examples as direct quotes on your WIKI page. Add the page number.

With your small group, find four examples of foreshadowing. Write the examples as direct quotes on on your WIKI page. Add the page number.

In a well-written paragraph, explain why your group chose these examples based on the definitions of suspense and foreshadowing.

Suspense - a state or condition of mental uncertainty or excitement, as in awaiting a decision or outcome, usually accompanied by a degree of apprehension or anxiety.

Foreshadowing - to show or indicate beforehand that something will happen.

Four examples of suspense in chapters 1 and 2 are:

  • Emily Brent said: "That's a very small boat." page 24

  • Vera thought: "She looks frightened of her own shadow." page 29
  • Vera said: "Mrs. Owen didn't mention me?" page 29
  • Anthony Marston thought to himself: "Must go through with it, I suppose." page 36

Four examples of forshadowing in chapters 1 and 2 are:
  • Fred Naracott said cheerfully: "Can't land on Indian island when there's a southeasterly. Sometimes 'tis cut off for a week or more." page 27
  • "I'm talking to you, young man. The day of judgement is very close at hand." page 15
  • "There's a squall ahead. I can smell it." page 15
  • Dr. Armstrong thought: "I'm leaving my ordinary life behind me." page 33

The definition of suspense is a state of mental uncertainty or excitement and I thought that these examples showed this. Emily Brent was worried about going into such a small boat because she thought it would be unsafe. I would be in a state of suspense if I had to get into a boat I thought was too small. Vera described Mrs. Rogers as being frightened of her own shadow which is very suspenseful because you have to wonder what would make her so afraid. Vera also learned that Mrs. Owen didn't mention her to Mrs. Rogers and that would create suspense for Vera because it would be strange that she wouldn't tell a fellow employee of her coming. When Anthony Marston said to himself that he must go through with it this made me wonder, go through with what? I thought this was suspensful because it made me think something bad was going to happen but I didn't know what. The definition of forshadowing is to show or indicate beforehand that something will happen and I thought these examples showed that. When Fred said it would be very difficult to land on Indian Island if there was a southeasterly I definitely thought that a big storm would come. Also, when he says that you could get stuck on the island for a week or more I thought that this would happen too. When the stranger said that the day of judgement was at hand I thought that this was in some way predicting that something bad was going to happen to Mr. Blore later in the story. The stranger also said that he could smell a squall coming and I think this was forshadowing a real storm and also that something terrible was going to happen later. When Dr. Armstrong said that he was leaving his ordinary life behind he meant it as just a temporary change. I got the feeling that this is really predicting that he is leaving his ordinary life behind forever.

Wow! What great explanations for your choices. You made personal connections, too, which help with understanding. Links are done correctly! Way to go!
